Myconostica, Ltd.
Myconostica, Ltd. develops and supplies molecular diagnostic products to aid rapid, accurate, and specific diagnosis of life threatening infections in high risk populations such as patients in critical care. Initially the focus has been on fungal diagnostics. Such diagnosis can reduce mortality rates and allow more cost effective treatment by reducing intensive care stays and allowing more effective and targeted use of medicines.
The worldwide market for fungal tests alone is estimated to be in excess of US $250 million per annum with over 10 million people at risk of life threatening fungal infections each year in Europe and North America. Studies have shown that diagnosis of Aspergillus infection followed by antifungal treatment within the first 10 days of infection reduces mortality from 90% to 40%, thus highlighting the necessity of rapid diagnostic testing.
Amphion’s fully-diluted ownership stake in Myconostica was 19.08% as of 31 December 2009, valued at US $2.9 million (2008: US $4.2 million).
